We received our in-country travel itinerary today. Our two big days will be Sunday 12/18, when we will meet our 5-year-old Bethany, and Monday 12/26 our 1-year-old Ruth. We recently received updated reports and pictures of them. Here are the descriptions:
"LiHui(Bethany) is a happy girl and is often smiling. She is quiet and determined. This month, she can hold her bowl to eat and feel for food. She refuses to use chopsticks. She can take off her coat with the zipper. She likes to help take care of her younger foster brother. She likes him very much. Although she can go anywhere, she is still afraid to stand on one foot or hop; she is afraid that someone might push her over. She cannot write anything, but always sits at the table and says she is studying. She can express herself clearly. She tells her foster parents who came to visit their house or who annoyed her while they were out. She cannot count. But she repeats the numbers when she hears her foster sister counting. She likes running after other children and copying the words that she hears them say. She can identify many things by hearing. She knows in which drawer the medicine is stored, and in which drawer the bowls are. She has the concept of time and asks why her foster sisters have not come home from school yet if they are late."
"FuJu(Ruth) is a shy little girl that is easy going. She enjoys practicing standing. She loves her walker and you can find her moving all around in it all day. She likes rice, rice cereal, vegetables and meat. This month, she is learning to sort shapes and colors. She will learn things quickly because she is very curious about what is going on. FuJu showed her stubborn side this month when the foster care manager went to see her because she didn't recognize him."
I can't wait to hold them in my arms. (Hope they will let me!)
Faith and I went out shopping for our trip this morning. Among all the necessities like underwear, carseat and bottles, etc., I was so happy to find a wooden toy clock by Melissa and Doug. Each hour of the clock is a wooden numbered, shaped block. The hour and minute hands are also movable. All I need to do is to put Braille label on each wooden number block and clock hands. It will be a great toy for Bethany to learn numbers, shape and most importantly, the concept of a clock, a skill that she will use daily to identify directions, orientations, and organization, including as basic as the position of food on her plate.
In the mean time, San, Faith and I are continue learning our Braille! Faith and I pretty much have the numbers 0-10, and alphabets A-J memorized. San is way ahead of us; he can read/decode short sentences printed in Braille. Faith and I are reading the book "Follow My Leader" by James Garfield, which was introduced to us by a friend at church. The book is about an 11-year-old boy who is blinded by a firecracker accident and how he re-learns everything in different ways and readjusts his life. A truly heart-warming and inspiring story.
We are very excited, but honestly, also very nervous - we have read as much as we can about blindness, visited blind student in school and spoke to vision teachers. No matter how much we try to prepare, we still feel very unprepared. How is it like to raise a blind child? We are going to find out very soon. It almost feels like the moment is here; we are about to be dropped off by a plane flying high in the sky; to free falling straight down with no way to go back and nothing to grab hold to. The only thing we were told is that we have parachutes on our backs (God Himself), and at the right altitude and the right moment, the parachutes will open and eventually lead us to safe landing.
He is the North Star that guides me
The One who loves like a Father
He is the water of life,
That I will not thirst again
The Light that covers all darkness
He is the path that leads to life
The great I AM
He is the dealer in the game of fate
The aspirin when I have a headache
The parachute when I fall
My song in life
